Oettinger Davidoff brings something ‘Special 53’ to DF&TR cigar aficionados

Switzerland’s Oettinger Davidoff AG has revived an 18-year- old vintage cigar blend with the launch of the limited edition ‘Special 53’ – Capa Dominicana.
Described as ‘an outstanding cigar from every angle’, Special 53 is produced in a 53-ring gauge ‘perfecto’ 53 x 6 1/8” format, uniting five tobaccos from the Dominican Republic for a 100% Dominican cigar experience.
Special 53 will be available at global travel retail locations, flagship stores and select merchants from July, although launch dates may vary dependent on the country.
LIMITED-RUN IN GTR
For global travel retail, the product is presented exclusively in a box of five cigars and available on a limited run of 1,875 boxes worldwide.
The cigar was originally launched in 2002, when ‘a pure Dominican blend as well as a perfecto with 53-ring gauge were firsts in our industry’, says Oettinger Davidoff.
“Bringing back this cigar after 18 years was an even greater challenge that is now masterfully accomplished,” said the Basel-based cigar manufacturer.
“Aficionados around the globe will be enlightened by the experience of enjoying a Special 53.”
Edward Simon, Chief Marketing Officer at Oettinger Davidoff says the journey began when Davidoff craftsmen were charged in the 1990s to produce a blend of 100% Dominican tobaccos.
“After nearly 20 years that journey found its completion in 2002 when our master blenders had turned these tobaccos into the beautiful and refined Special 53 – Capa Dominicana cigar,” he said.
“It is this achievement, of leading the way to make the cultivation of wrapper tobaccos in the Dominican a reality that we celebrate today with the re-release of this limited edition.”
The Capa Dominicana wrapper leaf has been aged for more than 10 years and is complemented by a binder leaf aged for more than eight years and Dominican filler tobaccos aged up to 6.5 years.
“The 53-ring gauge perfecto format was developed especially for said wrapper leaf to deliver its taste impact optimally,” added Simon.
