Dubai targets +$21m ‘discount day’

By Doug Newhouse |

Dubai Duty Free is preparing to offer up to 30% discounts on December 20 as part of its 30th anniversary celebrations.

This traditional end of calendar event where a wide range of merchandise is discounted by up to 30% for a 24-hour period is much anticipated by many passengers and will run from midnight on December 19 to midnight on December 20.

All departing and arriving customers will be able to participate at both Dubai International Airport and at Al Maktoum International Airport – Dubai World Central.

Commenting on the anniversary day plans, Colm McLoughlin, Executive Vice Chairman of Dubai Duty Free said: “This is a major milestone for the operation and we want our customers to celebrate along with us and to thank them for supporting us for the past three decades.

“Also, on the anniversary day, we have identified and sourced seven different products which we will sell at 1983 prices and that’s just something special for our customers,” he added.

AIMING AT PLUS-$21M IN JUST 24 HOURS

This special discount day has been a calendar feature amongst all of the promotions run at Dubai Duty Free since 1983 and is a very dynamic sales period for DDF with last year’s event generating sales of Dhms.76.91m ($21m).

“I think the big discount day is going to create a fantastic atmosphere at Dubai Duty Free for the entire 24 hours and it would be terrific to break the daily sales record on the anniversary day,” added McLoughlin.

Dubai Duty Free says a party-like atmosphere will reflect the 30-year celebrations and DDF also plans to conduct a Millennium Millionaire, a Finest Surprise Luxury Car draw and the final ‘Shop and Win’ draw which ran for 30 days leading up to the anniversary day, offering the prize of a 30g gold coin being won each day.

Dubai Duty Free achieved sales of $20m in its first year of operation in 1983 and expects to record $1.8bn in total sales by the end of this calendar year.
