OAMC forms training JV with DAA

By Doug Newhouse |

Oman Airport Management Company has formed a strategic joint venture with the Dublin Airport Authority to train and develop OAMC employee skill sets.

This is to support the Government of Oman’s investment in Muscat and Salalah airports in Oman to enhance and develop passenger movements to support the country’s growing tourism sector.

The Oman Airport Management Company is responsible for airport management and operations of the new airports and it says that it wants to ensure that its employees are ready to operate the new airport facilities.

As part of this new initiative OAMC plans to offer 100 employees the opportunity to train in the airports of Dublin and Cork over the next six months, with additional trainees expected to follow thereafter.

In a statement, OAMC said: “The first course that will travel to Dublin, Ireland will be employees from the OAMC ICT Department who will commence their development in Dublin and Cork Airports during the first half of August 2014. The development plan will include on the job and classroom training for all operational and business functions that will be carried out by OAMC in the new Muscat and Salalah Airports.

“In addition to the training and development provided by DAAI, experienced representatives will also visit Oman to provide operational support, and on the job training in the new facilities. The agreement also offers opportunities to DAAI employees to spend time with OAMC when the new airports open, to provide them with visibility of the exciting new technologies that are being delivered.

LATEST AIRPORT TECHNOLOGY…

“The new airport projects in Muscat and Salalah will deliver the most up-to-date ICT systems in aviation technology, with new levels of integration and collaboration.  This will include centralized control centres supporting multiple functions and stakeholders, with new levels of operational and technical integration that DAAI will be able to observe, and sub sequentially develop their own employees for their own airports.

“DAAI Training Academy is a leading provider of aviation related training services. They have experience of more than 60 years in the operation of airports including Dublin and Cork, which both have very similar operations to those in Muscat and Salalah. Besides strong presence in Ireland, they also have shares in a number of other European Airports. They also provide courses that are certified by leading aviation authorities such as ICAO and IATA.”

Total passenger traffic through Muscat Airport rose by 8% to 3,687,180 passengers by the end of May 2014, compared to 3,416,394 in the same period last year.

Official statistics issued by the Public Authority for Civil Aviation (PACA) shows an increase in the passenger arrivals by seven per cent to 1,848,454 passengers by the end of May 2014 compared to 1,728,640 passengers during the same period in 2013.

The number of departing passengers also increased by 10 per cent to 1,823,387 passengers by the end of May 2014, compared to 1,662,902 passengers during the same period in 2013.

Oman Airports Management Company launched its duty free and F&B Request for Proposals (RFP) for its new Salalah Airport master concession last March and the original timetable for all offers was May 8. OAMC indicated then that it expects to award the Salalah concession in July and then tender its new Muscat Airport duty free contract sometime later this year.
