Singapore Changi Airport handled 0.3% less passengers at 4.65m in June, but this was still the highest monthly total in any month this year.

The Changi Airport Group said that the slight passenger drop was in line with a slight decline in aircraft movements of 0.5% to 28,130. The cargo total of 154,700 tonnes also fell by 0.2% last month, compared to June 2013.

By contrast, 26.61m passengers used Changi in the first half of 2014, a nominal rise of 1.4% more than the corresponding period in 2013. During the same six-month period, flight movements increased 2.9% to 171,680, while cargo shipments totalled 910,100 tonnes, a growth of 0.6% on-year.

The Changi Airport Group said: “Travel demand within the Asia Pacific region spurred traffic growth for the half-year, with traffic to Northeast Asia and South Asia growing 5.1% and 4.1% respectively. This was offset by weaker demand for travel to Thailand, which declined 18% for the half-year.

DENPASAR-BALI GROWS FAST

“Jakarta continued to top the list of Changi Airport’s busiest routes, followed by Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok and Manila. Denpasar-Bali (shown above) registered a strong 31% increase in the first six months of 2014 compared to a year ago – the fastest growing among the top 10 routes.”

Newly introduced services include an expansion of Air France’s connectivity to Indonesia where it begun daily services from Paris to Jakarta (via Singapore) on 10 July. On 26 June, Jetstar Asia also started a daily service to Fukuoka and SilkAir launched a new service to Hangzhou on 27 June, operating four weekly flights from Singapore.

Meanwhile, the latest ‘Be A Changi Millionaire’ Monthly Winner has his decision to purchase four boxes of chocolates at Changi to thank for being picked as the first monthly finalist for the ‘Be a Changi Millionaire’ 2014 Grand Draw’. Thirty-five year old Singaporean project manager Huang Xiao Qiang was the lucky winner who has vowed to bring his whole family down to Changi Airport for luck when he competes in the grand finale early next year.

New retail outlets opened during the last month also leather specialist Fossil in Changi T2, offering a wide variety of watches and fashion accessories, while Longchamp has opened its second outlet in Changi’s T2 Departure Transit Mall. Two new chocolate concept stores – Cocoa & Co and M&M’s World – have also opened in Terminal 1’s transit area.
