UN and Dufry highlight ‘global goals’ at Davos Conference

By Doug Newhouse |

Davod 2017The United Nations and Dufry have taken the #YouNeedToKnow educational awareness campaign to Zürich Airport en-route to the World Economic Forum in Davos, to highlight the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) also known as ‘the Global Goals’.

The United Nations multimedia campaign was initially unveiled at the UN’s HQ in Geneva last November before moving to Heathrow Airport in December and it is now being featured to welcome visitors to Zürich Airport throughout the World Economic Forum in Davos until it ends on 22 January 2017.

PROMOTING FUTURE WORLD VALUES AT ZURICH AIRPORT

In a statement, the United Nations says that an average of two million passengers travel through Zürich Airport each month and they are now being greeted by wall-size banners and video screens promoting the Global Goals, with the appeal for all present to do their part to help achieve them by 2030.

The campaign visuals have been installed prominently in the transit area and the duty free shops and carry a central message to visitors that there are no second chances to save the planet for future generations.

As such, it urges them to rally around the Global Goals and engage with the challenges involved in ridding the world of poverty, providing quality education, guaranteeing gender equality and fostering economic growth.

Commenting, Michael Møller, Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva said: “Bringing the Goals to passengers from all around the world, some of whom are attending the WEF conference in Davos, is a great opportunity to remind them that, to achieve the Global Goals, we will need the highest-level political commitment, the collective effort of all people, and the engagement of all actors, at all levels, including the private sector.”

These comments are also in line with the United Nations’ policy position that informing two billion people about these Global Goals by the end of 2017 will be key to their successful achievement – or otherwise – over the next 14 years.

Zurich Airport campaign

The UN’s team from the Perception Change Project set up the #YouNeedToKnow campaign at Zürich Airport with Dufry, where customers in the duty free shop could spin the wheel to win a prize of a story book, or a luggage sticker with #GlobalGoals or Recipes for Peace, Rights & Well-being all being promoted.

To spread the word, the campaign also encourages passengers and airport visitors to take pictures against the backdrop with the SDGs icons and spread the message on social media using the #YouNeedToKnow hashtag.

Adding his comments, Dufry CEO Julian Diaz said: “As the leading retailer in airports across the world, Dufry stands at the heart of global connectivity.

HIGLIGHTING 17 KEY OBJECTIVES

“We are delighted to collaborate with the UN and the international community in their ambition to bring two billion people to know about the 17 key objectives in the quest to ensure a sustainable future for all.”

Last Monday, Zürich Airport travellers were able to take part in a wheel of fortune event, which was organized as part of the campaign by the UN Perception Change Project and Dufry Zürich.

Travellers can also pick up free luggage stickers at the duty free shop, which emphasise that all change starts with the actions of individuals.

The United Nations multimedia campaign was initially unveiled at the UN’s HQ in Geneva back in November 2016, where UN officials posed for ‘a unity photo’ with a few ‘familiar Dufry faces’.
