Will DDF’s 33rd anniversary event trump $48.5m in 2015?

Dubai Duty Free is once again staging its annual 72-hour anniversary promotion from 18-20 December offering a 25% discount at its stores ‘on a wide range of products’. Its endeavours have successfully boosted sales for the company during the pre-Christmas period over the last three decades and last year was no exception.
DDF says it registered $48.5m at the event last year during the company’s 32nd anniversary event;$10.61m on 18 December; $10.69m on 19 December and $27.22m on 20 December [the actual anniversary day].
The 25% discount offer will be available for all departing, transiting and arriving passengers at Dubai International Airport and at Al Maktoum International Airport, beginning at midnight on the 17th of December and ending at midnight on the 20th of December.
Commenting on the anniversary day plans, Colm McLoughlin, Executive Vice Chairman & CEO of Dubai Duty Free said: “The DDF anniversary promotion is now a highly-anticipated event with many travellers choosing to travel on the days when the 25% anniversary discount is offered. I think that this is going to create a fantastic festive atmosphere for the entire 72 hours.”
‘PARTY-LIKE ATMOSPHERE’
As part of the 33rd Anniversary celebrations, Dubai Duty Free says it will ensure a party-like atmosphere throughout the retail operation. Plans are in place to conduct a Millennium Millionaire draw, a Finest Surprise Luxury Car draw and a series of other promotional activities that will involve both travellers and staff.
“We like to involve our customers, suppliers and staff in our celebrations as it is our way of saying thank you for helping us achieve such fantastic sales results over the years,” added McLoughlin.
The anniversary discount offer, which began with Dubai Duty Free’s 20th Anniversary in 2003, has proved so successful and popular that it has now become a much-anticipated travel day.
When Dubai Duty Free opened for business on 20th December 1983, the operation had 100 employees, 30 of whom are still in active service and are referred to as the ‘pioneers’. The operation currently employs almost 6,000 staff comprising of 46 different nationalities.
