Gatwick Airport names Mark Johnston as new Chief Operating Officer

Former AGS Airports COO Mark Johnston takes control of Gatwick’s day-to-day operations.

Experienced aviation executive Mark Johnston has been appointed as the permanent Chief Operating Officer of London Gatwick Airport, effective today (18 March).

He takes over from John Higgins, who has been interim Chief Operating Officer since January 2023 in addition to his role as Business Improvement Director.

As a former AGS Airports (Aberdeen, Glasgow and Southampton Airports) COO, Johnston adds weight to the leadership team at the UK’s second busiest airport, where he takes on responsibility for ensuring its safe, efficient and smooth day-to-day operations.

He is tasked with overseeing the delivery of key strategic projects while managing key departments such as passenger operations, security and aerodrome.

“Proven track record”

His CV includes more than two decades’ experience in technical and professional roles, having led security, technical, infrastructure and airport terminal departments.

Having joined Glasgow Airport in 2004 following positions in the global semi-conductor industry, Johnston went on to hold various posts including as Operations Director before being promoted to Managing Director in 2018.
