SFO exterior kerbSan Francisco International Airport (SFO) and United Airlines have held a soft opening low key preview of the newly-renovated $253m Terminal 3 East Concourse, which includes a large 53,000sq ft circular expansion, new local f&b and retail concessions and improved passenger services.

The new facility formally opens for business tomorrow (Wednesday 18 November) and is effectively a new concourse connecting Boarding Areas E and F, a consolidated central security checkpoint, three additional aircraft boarding gates and a new United Club location.

“This inviting, relaxing space features a fresh take on what we aim to deliver in all of our facilities – thoughtful passenger amenities, concessions representing the San Francisco Bay Area, inspiring public artwork, and environmentally-sustainable design.”

The new facility consists of eight new retail and dining outlets (as yet unspecified), including small businesses based in the San Francisco Bay Area. Free Wi-Fi, 230 power outlets and 200 USB outlets are also available to passengers.

In addition, there are four new art installations which have been sourced courtesy of the San Francisco Arts Commission, along with lounge-style seating areas which are designed to create a ‘relaxing, inspiring environment’. There are also guest restrooms which feature private changing rooms.

The area will also include the latest design new United Club room which includes relaxation and food and drink facilities for United’s VIP customers, plus a panoramic view of airport operations and a gallery of photos of United’s history.

Meanwhile, San Francisco International Airport confirmed to TRBusiness exclusively last August that it is planning to issue a request for proposals for its duty free concession in mid 2016 – well ahead of the formal expiry date of December 31, 2017.

“While we are planning to issue an RFP for duty free concessions at SFO, this activity will not occur until summer of 2016,” said Doug Yakel, Communications & Marketing officer at San Francisco International Airport.
