Dufry awarded new Nairobi contract

By Doug Newhouse |

Dufry formally confirmed today it has won the 10-year duty free concession at Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport T1A until 2024.

The leading DF&TR operator stated this morning that Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) has now signed the concession agreement for development and management of ‘Duty Free Retail Services’ under a single master license, with the actual signing completed earlier this month (October 15, 2014).

Dufry will now operate more than 751sq m of retail area in the newly opened terminal facility, including ‘other shop’ concept duty free stores. The retailer says that the commercial area will be located in the departure area of the newly opened Terminal 1A and this new space will allow Dufry to offer a comprehensive range of products – both international and local – and particularly in the tobacco, spirits, fine food, perfume & cosmetics, fashion and accessories assortment. In 2013, the airport welcomed a total of 6m passengers.

Dufry CEO Julían Díaz said: “We are very pleased about this new agreement with Kenya Airports Authority (KAA). Dufry’s new business in Kenya will allow us to further develop the business in Africa.”

Kenya Airports Authority Managing Director Lucy Mbugua stated: “Kenya Airports Authority is happy to be associated with Dufry, which is one of the biggest duty free retailers in the world. With this agreement our passengers will be able to enjoy a superior airport experience, comparable to the best internationally. This will further enhance Jomo Kenyatta International Airport’s status of being the preferred airport system hub in the region.”
