Budapest Airport to focus on increasing retail spend

By Charlotte Turner |

Budapest Airport says the December opening of a SPAR supermarket at Budapest Airport ‘crowned a year of strategic moves’ to increase retail spend per passenger by the airport’s bud:shopping team within the commercial business unit.

The new 300sq m SPAR supermarket, on the landside arrivals level of Terminal 2B, is based on the chain’s ‘City SPAR’ convenience store concept.

“2013 was also marked by the highly successful Hungarian is Trendy summertime campaign coordinated between bud:shopping and all of its retail partners offering specialised Hungarian products,” says the airport operator.

“Nearly 6,500 shoppers took part with all participants receiving free gifts and samples. Hungarian goods were also excellent performers in a series of ‘Trinity’ promotions between bud:shopping, Heinemann Duty Free, and local and international brands with the specific Zwack Unicum promotion achieving a near 350% sales increase, the highest of six month-long Trinity promotions in 2013.”

HUNGARIAN IS TRENDY

Hungarian is Trendy followed a widening of bud:shopping’s local and regional specialities with the opening of a music/Budapest souvenir shop in April which sold a range of products including luxury hand painted porcelain to Rubik’s Cubes and other cube-themed merchandise.

Forthcoming retail developments include the Q1 2014 conclusion of a year-long restructuring of the T2A landside arrivals retail facilities. The revamped area will feature several new stores and a Camden food co ‘grab and go’ food and beverage outlet majoring on freshly made, healthy, and locally-sourced options.

Budapest will be Camden food co’s second-only European airport location and will be operated by SSP.

“We believe SPAR Hungary’s City SPAR concept is the most appropriate to fulfil passengers’ needs for high-quality, comfortable and quick shopping, and we are delighted that we have also managed to create 21 new jobs at the airport in the process,” commented Jost Lammers at the opening of the supermarket.

LOCAL BRAND PROMOTION

Kam Jandu, Budapest Airport’s Chief Commercial Officer, added: “It was one of our long-held plans to establish a supermarket where our passengers can buy the most essential products that they need when they arrive in Hungary, or return home after a long journey.”

Nearly 6,500 shoppers took part with all participants receiving free gifts and samples such as Herend porcelain and Szamos marzipan. The ‘Hungarian is Trendy’ summertime campaign promoted local brands such as Zwack Unicum, Pick and Royal Tokaji.
