Rising intercontinental volumes as FRA traffic soars 150% to 2.2 million in Jan

Frankfurt Airport (FRA) handled 2.2 million passengers in January 2022 as an increase in international travel – particularly to the US – accelerated traffic by 150.4% compared with January 2021.
The airport also benefitted from passengers returning home after the holidays, read a statement from operator Fraport AG.
While passenger demand did slow due to the spread of Omicron, FRA’s passenger traffic rebounded to nearly half (-52%) of the level recorded in January 2019.
The airports across Fraport’s international portfolio reported lower passenger figures in the pre-pandemic reporting month (January 2019), the exception being Pulkovo Airport in St Petersburg (+10.5%).
However, the Group’s airports worldwide continued to report positive passenger gains in January 2022; most posted significant improvements, with some exceeding growth of 100% year-on-year – albeit versus what were heavily depressed traffic levels in January 2021.
As reported, Fraport AG inked an agreement with Lufthansa’s Miles & More loyalty scheme last month.
Fraport AG has become a strategic partner of Miles & More to enable passengers to earn and redeem air miles at Frankfurt Airport, including at its retail outlets.
