‘Net Zero Roadmap’ to unfurl for travel and tourism at COP26 in major initiative

By Luke Barras-hill |

The social and environmental research data will be a first for the industry.

A new agenda for climate action in travel and tourism will launch at the UN Climate Change Conference (COP26) in Glasgow next month.

The ‘Net Zero Roadmap’ will couple with the unveiling of ‘ground-breaking social and environmental research data’, says the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) after making the announcement at its virtual climate week event during Climate Week NYC.

The roadmap includes an overview of current climate actions across the travel and tourism industry, lessons learned from the past 18 months, plus action frameworks for specific industries to quicken climate commitments and emissions reduction.

CONTINUOUS UPDATES

WTTC says the ‘vital pieces of work’ represent the organisation’s biggest deliverables in the drive towards net zero by 2050.

The initiative is being run in partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and professional services and consulting experts Accenture.

“The launch of our Net Zero Roadmap for the travel & tourism sector and development of sector-wide data to measure our success are major steps to show how travel & tourism is playing its part in addressing climate change,” said Julia Simpson, WTTC President & CEO.

“This is a major new initiative that will support our industries on their journeys to become Net Zero.”

WTTC will regularly monitor and update the climate action inventory research, providing continuous updates until the travel & tourism sector’s targets are achieved.

As reported, WTTC and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) published a major report earlier this year addressing the blight of single-use plastics (SUPs) in the travel and tourism industry.
