Gatwick 2014 traffic up by +7.6% to 38m

London Gatwick Airport reports that a record 38m passengers departed from the facility in 2014 – an increase of 7.6%.

Record growth was reported for low-cost carriers, European business travel services and long haul providers to emerging markets and other destinations.

Management reports that Gatwick’s growth was driven across a range of markets, with long-haul traffic playing a key role, including the launch of new low-cost long-haul flights to New York and Los Angeles which helped drive up North American flights by 2.8%.

Traffic to other long-haul destinations in 2014 increased by 12.1%, with travel to Dubai alone up a notable 8.3%.

Gatwick’s links to emerging markets were also boosted with new routes, such as Garuda Indonesia’s new services to Jakarta and new easyJet routes to Tel Aviv.

The airport now claims that around one in five passengers now travels through Gatwick on business and the airport serves 46 of the 50 top business destinations in Europe.

Among the fastest growing in 2014 were Copenhagen (+23.9%) along with Paris and Brussels, which were boosted by the launch of new services in 2014.

Last year’s record-breaking growth was completed by more than 2.5m passengers travelling through the airport in December – a +8% increase on last year.

Gatwick adds that these figures also mark 22 consecutive months of growth at Gatwick.
