Salvatore-Sciacchitano-ICAOAirports Council International (ACI World) has offered its congratulations to Salvatore Sciacchitano on his appointment as the new President of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Council.

Sciacchitano was elected by ICAO’s 36-member governing body on Monday (25 November) and will lead the organisation on a three-year mandate, effective 1 January.

He succeeds Dr. Olumuyiwa Benard Aliu, who has held the post since 2014.

Praising the ‘long and beneficial collaboration’ that has helped support safe and sustainable aviation, Angela Gittens, Director General, ACI World said: “I congratulate Mr. Sciacchitano on his appointment as the sixth Council President and look forward to continuing our close relationship with ICAO, particularly in capacity building and innovation.

“I would also like to thank Dr. Aliu for his significant contribution to the aviation industry. He has played a vital and successful role in drawing industry stakeholders together through collaboration and partnerships, and I wish him the best for his future endeavours.”

Forty four General Directors of the European Civil Aviation Conference endorsed Sciacchitano, who takes on the role following a 39-year career in aviation taking in spells at the Italian Airworthiness Authority, Italian Civil Aviation Authority and European Civil Aviation Conference.

Recently, he was appointed to the Italian Delegation to the ICAO Council.

Established in 1944, ICAO is a specialised agency of the UN tasked with promoting safe aviation regulations and standards globally
