Airport sales up as border sales fall

Canadian Airport sales grew by 14.09% to C$23.3m in January 2014, while Land Border sales fell by -4.37% to C$6.8m.
On the airports side of the business the big categories were led comprehensively by Perfume, Cosmetics, Skincare with a market share of 32.05%, corresponding to C$7.4m – an increase of 74.99%.
Liquor, including spirits, wines, liqueurs and coolers, came in second with sales of C$5.1m – a market share of 22.14% and sales rise of 13.17% over the performance in January 2013.
Tobacco, cigars and the loose tobacco category came in third with sales of C$4.4m, a market share of 19% and a sales increase of 29.83%. Jewellery, watches and clocks took fourth place, with sales of C$1.7m, a market share of 7.3% and an increase of 25.81%.
Other category sales and their respective increases or decreases were: Office and Travel Supplies with C$898,440 (-66.87%); Clothing C$916,021 (46.32%); Accessories C$998,492 (+63.36%); Souvenirs C$342,684 (-73.19%); Electronics, Cameras, Binoculars, etc C$32,506 (-85.66); Beer and malt-based coolers C$11,837 (-86.56%); Glassware and China etc C$6,208 (-96.72%); Crafts/arts C$5,949 (-21.66%); Other C$1,741 (+113.25%).
The land border business was under pressure in January.
LAND BORDER SALES FALL 4.4%
Looking at the Land Border, total sales in January 2014 came in at C$6.8m, down -4.37% on January 2013. Liquor was the biggest category with sales down 4.15% to C$2.4m, which represented a market share of 36.54%.
Tobacco was the second largest category with sales of C$2.2m, a 6.60% decline amounting to a market share of 33.23% and Perfume, Cosmetic, Skincare generated sales minus -0.35% of $986,181 – a market share of 14.42%. Food products attracted sales of C$296,444, minus -2.57%, but accounting for a market share of 4.33%.
As the last of the C$200,000 categories and above, beer and malt-based coolers accounted for sales of C$285,707 representing a market share of 4.18% and a sales advance of 3.86% compared with January 2013.
The only other category to sell over C$100,000-worth of merchandise was Accessories with sales of C$101,084, a market share of 1.48% and a sales progression of 0.53% for the sector.
