Changi readies promotions in Jan as public area retailers absorb GST hike

By Luke Barras-hill |

Retail tenants in the public areas of Changi Airport are absorbing GST on shoppers' purchaes.

Since launching in 2010, the ‘2XGST’ promotion has become one of Changi Airport’s signature campaigns.

Singapore Changi Airport will activate a trio of promotional windows for shoppers this month to welcome in the New Year.

Under the ‘2XGST’ discount period, which runs from 12-14 January, 19-21 January and 26-28 January, consumers can benefit from an additional 9% off purchases with a minimum net value of S$30/US$7.

Those spending a minimum of S$60/US$45 and paying by Mastercard through Changi’s digital wallet Changi Pay will receive a S$9 Changi Pay voucher credited to their account.

The flurry of promotions arrive as operator Changi Airport Group (CAG) announces that participating* retail tenants situated in the public areas across Changi’s four terminals will continue to absorb goods and sales tax.

Effective this month – and as anticipated – Singapore has raised GST to 9%.

Second GST hike kicks in

This followed an earlier lift from 7% to 8% in 2023, aligned to a  announcement from the government several years ago to stagger the rises over two stages.

Consumers are required to sign up to the complimentary Changi Rewards loyalty programme to avail of the GST saving.

Phau Hui Hoon, Vice President for Landside Concessions, CAG said: “We have been working with tenants to absorb GST for retail spend in the stores of our public areas for the past 15 years since 2009 and are glad that this partnership has continued.

“Coupled with the ‘2XGST’ promotion in January, we hope to not only bring our tenants more sales, but also treat shoppers to a little reprieve from the GST hike and spread some cheer ahead of the upcoming festive season.”

In a statement, CAG says it has opened Eu Yan Sang, Lynk Fragrances and Baker’s Well since the full reopening of Terminal 2 in November.

*Approximately 35 participating outlets currently absorb GST and participate in the 2XGST promotion. The promotion does not apply to Jewel Changi Airport, restaurants and non-participating stores such as supermarkets.
